Very emotional photograph, especially in black and white, and I like how you framed it as well, Mike.

Artist's Description

Mustang Cemetery in Walker county, Texas was started in 1896 and is still an active cemetery. It’s isolated hidden well off the main highway and is a dusty drive on dirt roads. I saw 5 wooden crosses with simple plaques on them. The cemetery association has placed crosses to mark graves with missing or badly deteriorated tombstones. It broke my heart to read the plaques on these crosses . They read from right to left:

UNK for Unknown
Jack Lofton Infant 1
Jack Lofton Infant 2
Jack Lofton Infant 3
Jack Lofton Infant 4
The registry (spells the names as “Loftin”) at the entrance didn’t have dates for these but did list a date of death for Lottie Loftin (Jack’s wife) as “before 1900”. Unfortunately, there was no indication of where Jack ended up. Hard times, hard life. It reminds me that any of the sorrow I’ve ever experienced pales in comparison and that I should count my blessings.

About Mike Schaffner

Mike Schaffner

Photography has been a passion of mine for over 45 years and I look forward to making photos for the next 45. I hope that you like my photos; I am okay with it if you dislike them; I just hope I never bore you. I haven't deliberately developed a certain style as I like most styles and genres of photography. I will admit a preference for black and white images as I find them more expressive but not to the exclusion of color images. I creatively edit my images to convey to the viewer the spirit of what I saw and felt about the scene rather than trying to document the scene journalistically. All of the images were made and processed by me. All are copyrighted, all rights reserved.
