Artist's Description

While in Vicksburg we visited the grave of my wife's great-great-grandfather, Andrew Hamblin (mistakenly recorded as Hamlin in the burial records and on the gravestone). His grave is in the Vicksburg National Cemetery located in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Vicksburg National Cemetery holds the remains of 17,000 Civil War Union soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery. At Vicksburg National Cemetery, 75% of the Civil War dead are listed as unknowns. Given that, it is hard to complain too much about a misspelling.

Andrew was born December 12, 1842 and died July 7, 1864 age 21. He served in the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, Company I. He died in Vicksburg General Hospital #2 with the cause of death listed as multiple infections. During this period four times as many men died of disease as died of battle related causes. His grave is located in Section L, Grave #6107.

About Mike Schaffner

Mike Schaffner

Photography has been a passion of mine for over 45 years and I look forward to making photos for the next 45. I hope that you like my photos; I am okay with it if you dislike them; I just hope I never bore you. I haven't deliberately developed a certain style as I like most styles and genres of photography. I will admit a preference for black and white images as I find them more expressive but not to the exclusion of color images. I creatively edit my images to convey to the viewer the spirit of what I saw and felt about the scene rather than trying to document the scene journalistically. All of the images were made and processed by me. All are copyrighted, all rights reserved.
